DP petitions East African Court of Justice over EAC Assembly representatives

The Democratic Party has petitioned the East African Court of Justice, challenging the procedure followed in choosing representatives to the community’s Parliament.

The party says the way in which members of the East African Legislative Assembly are chosen is illegal. The party is seeking an interim order halting the process of electing new representatives.

The DP Party President, Norbert Mao says representatives to the assembly should be taken from all parties that have members in the Parliament as provided for in the treaty governing the community.

Currently, representatives to the assembly are chosen basing on the party numerical strength in Parliament with the NRM forwarding 7 Members and 2 for FDC.

Mao says Kenya was in a similar situation and had to review its procedure.

Through its lawyers of Ssemuyaba and Company Advocates, DP will appear before the Court on the 23rd of this month to present its application for the interim order.
