A team of lectures led by Proof Ogwal Okange a pharmacologist at Makerere University College of health sciences are in advanced stages of a research about plants that eats the malaria causing mosquitoes.
Began last year, this scientific research is looking at finding out the effectiveness of the grass species that eat mosquitoes as one of the cheapest interventions to containing the life threatening malaria.
According to Dr Godfrey Bbosa these local grasses interrupt the lifecycle of mosquitoes at all stages.
He explains that the plants kill the larvae if planted in breeding place for mosquitoes and also trap the adult mosquitoes.
The government of Uganda is still looking for ways of eradicating malaria causing mosquitoes after the move to spray DDT was heavily criticised by environmentalists and some businesses.
Malaria remains Uganda’s leading killer disease, and is responsible for many inpatients at health centres in Uganda.
