The former head of procurement in the ministry of local government Robert Mwebaze has pinned stanbic bank as the one caused government to lose 4.7 billion shillings in 70,000 bicycle deal meant for Local councils.
Appearing before the local government and public service committee chaired by Florence kintu , investigating suspected corruption in the procurement of 70,000 bicycles meant for local councils Mwebaze said that the money was lost because stanbic bank paid the money using fake documents which were presented to the bank by an Indian firm Amman Industrial Tools and Equipment Ltd.
Mwebaze told MPS that the loss of the money should not be blamed on the procurement process but on the person who paid the money without verification of bill of lading.
He denied to the MPS of being pushed by any body to give this tender a Ghost firm as alleged.
The woman Mp for Lyantonde district Grace Namara after visiting India and interacted with Ugandan ambassador to India told the committee that this firm is not registered in India as reported.
However, the mps failed to detain Mr. Robert Mwebaza after some mps like the mp for Igara west Raphael Magyezi who wanted him confined for being a key witness in the whole deal.
The MPS tasked Robert Mwebaze to produce before committee the local directors of this company that failed to deliver the bicycles.
