Former Vice President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya is now out of prison after the Anti Corruption Court today agreed to reinstate his bail.
Bukenya was remanded on Monday last week to Luzira Prison after his bail was cancelled following his committal to the High Court to face abuse of office charges in relation to the Commonwealth heads of Government Meeting Uganda hosted in 2007.
A calm Bukenya on Tuesday morning appeared before Justice Paul Mugamba of the Anti- Corruption Court who reinstated the terms of the previous bail Bukenya secured.
The Court declined to give Bukenya his passport as he had requested to be able to travel to Nairobi for treatment, maintaining it must remain in Court possession together with other bail terms of depositing 50 million shillings in cash.
Minutes after his release, a smiling Bukenya waved to his supporters before driving off to his home. Bukenya later posted the following message on his facebook page.
“Oh my God thank you very much for listening to the prayers of your people & seeing me out of Prison on bail.
Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others. My Dear Friends, I can’t thank you enough for the messages that you have sent me. I am indeed humbled by your caring hearts and overwhelming support.
It is only a pity that I am being welcomed by a re-election in my Constituency for election multi-practice. What a GREAT surprise that my election to Parliament was not free and fair even after winning at all the Polling Stations including the home village polling station of Mr Hussein Kasta. My Lord, I turn to you for Judgment for you know the Truth”.
