Security network in Uganda has learnt that several boxes of small arms and light weapons are smuggled into Uganda from Southern Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A source revealed this to our informer yesterday and said that the importation of illegal small arms was high in Uganda due to the weak arms embargoes in Uganda. Uganda controls the importation of sugar, salt and cars but it reduces the surveillance on importation of illegal firearms.

Importation of illegal firearms has led to the loss of lives in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Southern Sudan among other African countries.

Uganda recently signed on an Arms Trade Treaty in a bid to bar importation of illegal firearms such that it uses it to control the inflow of the illegal firearms into Uganda. Uganda is among the countries in the world much affected by the importation of illegal guns.
