Uganda Cranes survived a defeat against Senegal with a late penalty to keep alive the country’s hopes of Qualifying for the African Cup of Nations finals. Uganda drew 1-1 in Saturday’s game against Senegal.
The Cranes playing at their home in Mandela National Stadium Namboole went behind to veteran Sulaiman Kamara’s strike which seemed to be the game’s decider up to the 8oth minute.
Uganda’s chances at the Senegal goal were few, while the West Africans always seemed potent when the ball was passed to the Cranes box.
But the introduction of Geoffrey Massa brought dividend for coach Bobby Robert Williamson who was under pressure to avoid losing at home after securing a 1-1 draw against powerhouse Angola in Luanda last weekend.
Massa’s drives forward were a headache for the Senegal defense which had seemed water tight for most of the evening. Geoffrey Walusimbi slotted a penalty past the Angola keeper after Massa was brought down in the box.
The Cranes were almost punished immediately, while a chance by Tanzania based Simba playmaker Emma Okwi in the 88th minute went begging. But the Cranes were the happier of the two teams to go off with the draw that will keep alive Uganda’s chances of qualifying for the African Nations Cup finals.
