Police have asked former Attorney General, Dr. Khiddu Makubuya to appear before police detectives at the CID headquarters at Kibuli in Kampala over an investigation into suspected irregular of 14 billion shillings compensation to Congolese car owners.
Ms Judith Nabakooba, who is the Deputy police spokesperson, says that Dr. Makubuya is aware that he is meant to appear before the police detectives on Friday at midday.
The compensation arose in 1996 when the UPDF soldiers allegedly impounded 10 Benz trucks at Ishasha border under unknown circumstances.
After the seizure of the cars, two companies: Goodman’s Agencies Ltd and Hasa Agencies Ltd, claimed to have owned the vehicles then sued the government of Uganda.
The police are investigating reports that Makubuya instead of defending the government of Uganda asked it to pay the two companies 14.4 billion shillings.
A source in government told us that the executive arm of government wants Makubuya to be held liable for misadvising and misleading president Museveni that the matter was undependable in court and recommended an out of court settlement.
The police detectives want the former minister to clarify why he opted for an out-of-court settlement, and his basis of computing 14 billion shillings as compensation for the vehicles that were not physically inspected to ascertain their condition.
