Ebola scare at Luzira Prison

Following an outbreak of Ebola in Uganda, the Uganda Prisons authorities banned all visits to prisons including Luzira prison. But the FDC president Col. Kiiza Besigye says this could be a ploy by the government to block the assistance FDC has been sending to political prisons whom president Museveni’s government imprisoned without trial.

However Frank Baine, the prisons spokesperson says that the visits were banned as one of the measures to prevent the spread of Ebola in prisons.

“The suspension of visits at Luzira prison is aimed at preventing infected persons from coming into contact with prisoners at Luzira,” he says.

But Col. Besigye has challenged the prisons authorities to sensitize prisoners on the spread of Ebola than banning normal visits.

Ebola broke out in Uganda three weeks back and it has so far killed over 30 people around the country and scores of others are still under doctors’ surveillance.
