Electoral commission bitter over government interference into its operations

The electoral commission has noted with concern the incidents that happened in Kasese district woman MP polls and other Local Council by elections across the country.
On Saturday 11th August, 2012, the Kasese district returning officer, Kanzira Tumwesigye and the assistant returning officer, Jacqueline Atuhairwe, were arrested by Uganda police allegedly on election-related fraud.
The Chairperson of the Electoral commission, Eng. Badru Kiggundu says that the commission is further concerned that the action by police has interrupted the timely transmission of election results by the retuning officer, and the subsequent publication of the said results as required under section 59 of the parliamentary elections act, 2005.
The arrests, on allegations of electoral fraud and continued harassment of people who supervised the electoral process, have created unnecessary unease and tension among Uganda Electoral Commission staff members especially at this time when the commission is undertaking another by elections in Butambala and Usuk parliamentary constituencies.
