The Electoral Commission (EC) is in the process of deregistering some political parties over their reported failure to account for the funds they get from local and international donors.
The chairman of the electoral commission, Eng. Badru Kiggundu has sent letters to Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) and Democratic Party among others to justify why they should not be deregistered over failure to account for the said donor funds.
Kiggundu also says that many political parties may be deregistered because they are not on the ground. He says that most of these political parties don’t participate in elections and or check on government systems as required in law.
The commission chairperson says that they have started on the process of deregistering political parties that do not comply with the law.
Charles Ochola, the EC spokesperson, however says that the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Democratic Party (DP), Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC), Justice Forum (JEEMA) Conservative Party (CP), and Forum for Democratic Party (FDC) have made partial accountability so far. Uganda has 39 registered political parties and organisations.
The laws of Uganda require that political parties in the country make annual accountability to the registrar and commission and send lists of their executive elected during delegates’ conferences to the EC.
