There is growing concern that as Uganda plans for its 50th independence celebrations, clashes between the ruling NRM and opposition activists are on the increase.
According to a group of NRM MPs calling themselves patriots/nationalists led by Kaberamaido MP Kenneth Omona, the NRM is mobilizing people to counter the opposition rioters during independence who want to disrupt the celebrations.
Addressing journalists at parliament, the group that included MP Moses Balyeku, Semugaba Samuel, Alex Byarugaba among others promised chaos against the opposition if they dare walk to disrupt the celebrations, saying their actions previously during the swearing in ceremony of the president where they attacked visiting presidents was very embarrassing for the country and shouldn’t be allowed to happen again.
Balyeku says the MPs wonder why the opposition 4GC led by FDC President Dr. Kizza Besigye goes to the street when there were elections that gave NRM victory and there are also chances in future where the government can be changed democratically.
He says as MPs, they are not going to sit when Besigye and his people are causing chaos and confusion in the country ahead of the celebrations. He says opposition protests will be met with resistance from NRM civilians and patriots.
Meanwhile, UPC chief whip Betty Amongi stated that her party fully supports independence celebrations and castigated those who want to disrupt it the celebrations.
She said UPC had also organized its separate celebrations in Akokoro where Milton Obote was buried.
This comes at a time when the opposition under 4GC have renewed their running battles with police under what they called WALK TO FREEDOM which began on Monday this week.
