The minister of state for Animal industry Bright Rwamirama has criticized the people of kiruhura for politicizing the increase of prevalence of East coast fever in their area by claiming that it has killed 5608 cattle.
He made the remarks while appearing before the Agriculture, Animal industry and fisheries to respond to the petition of the people of kiruhura which was brought to parliament by Nyabusozi Member of Parliament col. Fred mwesigye over East coast fever killing their animals and blaming Government for not controlling it.
He attacked the group for exaggerating the number livestock that have died of East coast fever in kiruhura district to 5608 yet the actual number is 200 cows since the beginning of this year.
Rwamirama told the Agriculture committee chaired by the member of parliament for Bugangaizi county west Dr. kasirivu Atwooki said that its not true that the ministry of Agriculture vaccinated animals against East coast fever elsewhere and ignored kiruhura area as alleged by petitioners.
He however, told mps on the committee that ticks which spread East coast fever are resistant to the drugs because farmers do not use the specific dosage.
The minister said that that its criminal for any farmer to have livestock with ticks and a directed the local Authorities to enforce this law so as East coast fever does not affect live stock.
He also blamed some live stock farmers who buy cheap live stock praying drugs which are fake and cannot control ticks.
Rwamirama warned farmers against grazing their live stock around game reserves to avoid them getting ticks and disease which can cause Uganda livestock products banned on world market.
