A delegation from Buganda kingdom has petitioned MPs from Buganda over the alleged scrapping off the local languages in the proposed ordinary secondary level curriculum.
The delegation led by Matthias Bwanika Mulumba say that the ministry of education proposed English, Kiswahili, French and Arabic as the languages to be taught in schools leaving the local languages out of the proposals.
Mulumba says that languages are key aspect of the culture but the selected languages cannot help Ugandans gain insight into their culture.
He also noted that the proposal contravenes with some articles in the constitution including article 37, 36 and 29 all of them which talk about enjoyment of culture languages.
The called upon parliament to intervene and ensure that the status quo remains as the languages have been optional and not compulsory.
The minister of education however has been consistent on dismissing allegations that the ministry is in the process of scrapping off the local languages from the syllabus.
