Causes of candida of the nipple: Candida is a yeast infection or thrush is a fungus that thrives in warm, dark, moist environments such as the mucus membranes of the mouth and vagina.

The diaper area, skin folds, bra pads and on persistently wet nipples. It normally lives on humans and 90% of babies are colonized by it a few hours after birth.

Candida of the nipple may occur any time while breastfeeding, due to constantly wet nipples. The widespread use of antibiotics also encourages the overgrowth of candida.

Some infections also come up as a result of breastfeeding mother having sore nipples, turns candida from its harmless to a disease.
