The term of office for the assessors of the high Court in Uganda came to an end in January 2013 meaning that those persons currently acting as assessors are doing so illegally. Sources in the High Court told our journalists in the field that the judiciary is still waiting for approval of the ‘presidency’ to recruit new ones.
One of the registrars of Nakawa High Court-Central Circuit confirmed on condition of anonymity the expiry of the term of office of assessors.
However, the registrar says that the recruitment exercise now has a government node so interested applicants are being invited to apply to provide services as assessors during the High Court Criminal Sessions for Nakawa High Court Circuit.
He says that applicants should be aged 30-60 years, responsible citizens, with a record of having provided service in one way or another to the community. The registrar says that applications should be accompanied with at least two (2) recommendations from area local authorities or employer or supervisor. The deadline for submission of applications is 30th October and they should be addressed to the registrar of Nakawa High Court –Central Circuit.
