Pope Francis to visit Uganda

 

 

Pope Francis will visit Uganda next year to attend the Golden jubilee since the caninisation of the Uganda martyrs since 1964.

The Golden jubilee celebrations will be followed by the Uganda martyrs conference at Lubaga cathedral in the same year.

The sources say that the Pope will preside over the Uganda martyrs day celebrations on June 3rd, 2014. The martyrs were killed between 1885-1887 on the orders of the then king of Buganda kingdom, Mwanga II.

Out of the 46 martyrs, 22 were Protestants and 24 Catholics. The catholic martyrs were beatified on 6th June 1920 by Pope Benedict XV and canonized by Pope Paul VI on October 1964.

The Archbishop of Kampala, Cyprian Kizito Lwanga confirmed Pope’s visit to Uganda and said that Rome has already cleared his visit.
