Many sections of Ugandans advocated for the return of political parties during the time when Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement was suffocating free association to political ideologies. After the return of political parties in Uganda, a number of political parties were registered. They included the Democratic Party (DP), Justice Forum (also known as JEEMA), Conservative Party (CP), and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and the National Resistance Movement. Most of these political parties registered with a belief that donors, Europeans and Americans would fund them. However, this did not come true.
In this news piece, we analyse for you why DP, FDC, NRM, Uganda Peoples’ Congress (UPC), CP and Jeema weakened immediately after registration. Uganda has over 39 registered political parties. But in this article, we only analyse political parties which have representation in Uganda parliament.
The Democratic Party ‘died’ the day Dr. Kawanga Paul Ssemwogerere was deposed by the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) and internal wrangles (militarism) in this Uganda’s oldest opposition party…
FDC politically collapsed when its leaders led by its former president Col. Kizza Besigye refused to give Betty Kamya the position of FDC National Chairperson. Col. Besigye and Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu (all come from western Uganda) wanted to favour their fellow westerner who later defected to the government side.
The ruling NRM is not saved either. It died the day its self-inflated strong man, Sam Kuteesa ungracefully dismised it’s Secretary General, Jaberi Bidandi Ssali, who had held its keys for a long time. The people whom you see dressed in NRM party T. Shirts don’t support NRM. They are president Museveni’s supporters.
UPC was also hacked to death by the dissolution of Dr. James Rwanyarare’s Presidential Policy Commission, and the exit of its iron lady Cecilia Ogwal (Dokolo woman MP).
Jeema was only sold to the public by Hajji Hussein Kyanjo. When Kyanjo was poisoned by his political enemies, JEEMA went to the limbo. CP is also not safe. Its influence declined when one of its founders Mayanja Nkangi was dismised from the party by party members who were headed by John Ken Lukyamuzi, the MP for Lubaga South.
The only opposition to Museveni’s leadership is from Buganda kingdom.
