The Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura has asked shopping malls to install closed circuit television cameras. The directive should be respected in a bid to beef up security and boost surveillance and monitoring within and across the country.
According to sources near Kayihura, the inspector general of police personally wrote to the proprietors of all big shopping malls in Kampala, informing them about the new directive. The cameras should be put at the entrance, exist points, waiting areas, parking yards and in stores.
According to police sources, the move to buy cameras is also aimed at improving security for customers. With the help of cameras, the proprietors of shopping malls will be able to monitor restricted areas such as the balconies on floors that usually used by criminals.
The police warn that shopping malls remain one of the most targets of terrorists in Uganda. About one million people visit shopping malls in Kampala and different parts of Uganda daily.
