Uganda government moves to takeover Uganda Red Cross Society

Following negative media reports concerning Uganda Red Cross Society, the central governing board of the Uganda Red Cross Society convened on 21st October 2013 at the Uganda Red Cross Society head offices to chart a way forward for the national society.

Sources told us that at the meeting which was attended by the Vice President of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, Paul Birech and the governor of Kenya Red Cross Society, Dr. Mohamud Said, the central governing body resolved as follows- to set up an independent and international probe committee to investigate the allegations against the Secretary General of the Uganda Red Cross Society.

The sources that attended the meeting said the committee starts work with immediate effect and shall report to the central governing board within two weeks.

We are reliably informed that Paul Birech is the chief overseer of the committee work. Hon. Stephen Tashobya-chairperson, institutional and organisational development committee of the central governing board is the chairperson of the committee.

Other committee members are Stephen Omollo, Isaiah Karanja (internal auditor Uganda Red Cross Society), Francis Buwule (legal advisor), Robinnah Jassa (chairperson human resource), and Charity Kutegeka is the committee vice chairperson. The chairperson of the central governing board is president Museveni’s advisor, Hon. Robert Sebunya.
