It is a pity that Uganda’s richest Muslims have not come out to help the completion of their main Mosque in Lira, Northern Uganda. The Muslims have abandoned and isolated the place of worship that was once promising Lira Jamiyah mosque.
This giant Muslim faith structure stands dilapidated with rusty iron bars, weary walls and a roofless top. The hope of completing it’s construction vaporised 34 years ago with the overthrow of Field Martial Al hajji Idd Amin Dada.
The Mosque was being constructed at the time when Americans and other European powers had started using some Ugandans who were based in Tanzania to distruct Amin’s regime in Kampala. About four years later, Amin was overthrown hence its appalling status.
This Mosque was to be the 2nd largest to the Gadaffi mosque in Kampala. Its second chance to be revitalised didn’t materialise as only weeks after the Gadaff foundation had agreed to complet it’s construction, a civil war erupted in Libya which culminated into the death of the Greatest son of Africa, Col. Muammar Gadaffi.
The Muslims in Uganda have the money needed to complete the Mosque but they are too divided. Uganda currently has two top Muslim leaders. The government side based in Old Kampala is headed by Mufti Shaban Mubajje while, the Muslim side, deemed to be opposition is headed by Sheikh Zubair Kayongo.
