The number one cause of fire-related death in Uganda among other African countries is smoke inhalation.
The smoke damages the body by asphyxiation (this means lack of oxygen), chemical irritation or both.
Smoke contains substances that don’t cause direct harm to person, but take up the space that is needed for oxygen.
The smoke, according to scientists, is one of the causes of chest infections and congestion. Smoking should be done by using charcoal stoves and paraffin lanterns because fuel burning appliances tend to give off carbon monoxide; an odorless, colourless, toxic gas. Besides, ensure the house especially the kitchen is well-ventilated.
