The National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) has pleaded to the members of parliament to support the proposed genetically modified Organism bill to regulate its use in Uganda to ensure food security among people in the country.
While at the consultative meeting at parliament the Head of the National Agricultural Biotechnology centre at Kawanda Dr. Andrew Kiggundu said that approving the law on genetically modified seeds will help farmers to get high yielding variety seeds that will give them better harvest.
He said that Uganda needs such a law since the population is growing and it will need a lot of food.
He however said that genetically modified variety seeds will be optional for farmers and with introduction of GMOs indigenous seeds will not be wiped out.
MPS said that they need to be accompanied by scientists to their constituencies to explain to farmers the importance of GMOs seeds.
The minister of state for planning Matia Kaija GMOs bill should have passed into law five years ago since the neighboring countries to have such a law.
