The government of Uganda is soon requiring all commercial banks in Uganda to start modern trends/ world class banking. The country leaders want all banks to build structures with digital capabilities to enable customer self service.
Under the new banking system, some of the selected bank customers will play the role of continuous patronage. A source in the ministry of finance told us that the minister for finance will soon summon all bank proprietors to be lectured about the new banking system needed in Uganda.
The source says the government plans to force banks to start rewarding their ‘big’ customers who have banked with them for many years. Currently its only Standard Chattered Bank in Kampala that has established modern digital banking system where customers can access online banking, email, book a flight, make a telegraphic transfer and get a drink whenever they access the bank premises. The government plans to enforce banks to shift from traditional bureaucratic banking practices characterised by too much paper work to enhanced digital capabilities aimed at making banking more convenient.
