South African company ESKOM denies ownership of UMEME

Ugandans sometime back were told that the government of Uganda had sold off U.E.B (Uganda Electricity Board) to a South African national electricity company Eskom. U.E.B was later renamed UMEME.

In 2009 UMEME faced a managerial crisis and Museveni appointed his brother Gen. Salim Saleh to save the power company from falling into a pit latrine.

But ESKOM did not send a single board of directors or its other official to Uganda to deal with the crisis at UMEME. However the rat fell out of the bag yesterday when one of our informers went to South Africa and had a chat with a senior director of ESKOM.

The ESKOM official told him that UMEME is owned by Ugandans. He narrated how ESKOM was brought in the deal to make Ugandans think that UMEME is owned by South Africans whereas it was not.
