300 students at Makerere face expulsion over illegal admission

The future of over 300 students at Makerere University hangs in balance following intelligence information that reached the ministry of education and sports that they joined the university without the mandatory requirements of two principle passes, and that others were admitted to courses they did not qualify because of money and political influence.

It is illegal in Uganda and across the world to get admitted at universities without following proper admission guidelines. Uganda’s regulations provide that for anyone to qualify for admission to a public university, he or she must have obtained at least two principal passes at A level at the same sitting. The intelligence briefing on education has also exposed irregularities in admission of students in other universities such as Busitema University, Mbarara University, Kyambogo University and Gulu University among others.  The sources in the ministry of education and sports have also confirmed that many universities have ignored proper university requirements for admission of students.

Education minister Jessica Alupo confirms that her ministry is investigating the allegations. She says the universities shall not chase away students before all the facts on the ground are investigated.
