Activists have asked government to enact laws that will facilitate internet usage among the population to foster development.
The chief Executive Officer Unwanted Witness a non-governmental organization promoting digital freedoms, Godfrey Ssebagala says that instead of enacting laws that to curtail internet freedoms, government facilitate usage of ICT for social and economic transformation.
Ssebagala says that government has already employed private companies to accelerate secret surveillance which undermine the people’s right to privacy as the use the new technologies.
Critics say that the after targeting Radio, Television, Newspapers and other platforms of expression, governments across the global have now started targeting new technologies like Internet and mobile phone communication.
Ssebagala says that for government to appreciate and benefit from the new internet platforms government should enact the data protection laws to protect users who may provide significant advice and information for nation development
The programs Associate at the Collaboration on International ICT policy in East Africa and Southern Africa, Ashnah Kalemera says that even in the effort to fight terrorism, child pornography and other cyber crimes, government should ensure the rights of bloggers, those on face book and twitter are not infringed upon.
