Did you know that the skin is the largest organ in the human body? In today’s health news briefing we bring you more facts on this subject.

In average an adult human being has a surface area of between 1.5-2.0 square meters (16.1-21.5 sq ft) of skin.  Most of the human skin is between 2–3 mm (0.10 inch) thick.

However, the thickness of the skin is not even, it varies with location. Skin has a thickness of around 0.5 mm on the eyelids but it is around 4mm thick when it comes to the palms of hands and soles of feet. This is according to scientists in the developed countries such as Canada, German, and USA.

The skin weighs about 16% of the total body weight of human beings. The human skin also constantly regenerates; an average person sheds around forty pounds of skin in his lifetime.
The average square inch (6.5 cm²) of skin holds 650 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels, 60,000 melanocytes, and more than 1,000 nerve endings. You can also find 20 million microscopic animals living on a square inch of human skin.
