The United States of America has warned Uganda on the increasing human rights violations and abuse of the court process. America, in particular is concerned on the police violation and frustration of Erias Lukwago.
The police, citing orders from its superiors, have continued to frustrate the work of Erias Lukwago, as the Lord Mayor of Kampala by confining him to his residence under the preventive arrest scheme. The same police don’t give him food, medication and allowance. The police have kept Lukwago under house arrest since Friday morning, blocking him from leaving his home to meet the public or conduct any official and private businesses like buying food. The sources at State House told this reporter that Obama government is highly concerned about the torture of opposition politicians in Kampala including Lukwago, Besigye and their supporters.
The police besieged Lukwago’s residence because on Thursday the High Court ruled that Lukwago was still the Kampala Lord Mayor and ordered that the process of removing him from office be stayed until his appeal has been disposed of by the court. However, the development did not please Kampala government leading Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, Attorney General Peter Nyombi and Internal Affairs Minister Gen Aronda Nyakairima to declare that Lukwago was no longer mayor.
