Uganda, Congo M23 rebel peace deal ends prematurely

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s president, Joseph Kabila, flew into Uganda on Monday morning for talks that was aimed at reviving a peace deal between his government and M23 rebel fighters. Kabila visited Uganda days after his government last month failed to seal a peace deal with M23 rebels.

During his visit to Uganda, Kabila at Entebbe Airport was received by Uganda minister Okello Oryemu and he was later driven to State House Entebbe where he met with president Museveni.

M23 rebels are Tutsi-insurgents who have fought Kabila’s government in eastern regions near the border with Uganda and Rwanda for over 10 years. The M23 rebels are reportedly backed by president Museveni of Uganda and Paul Kagame of Rwanda, why? The two leaders have some blood connection with M23 rebels.

However, after the meeting in Uganda, Kabila and Museveni failed to agree on continuation of peace talks with the rebels and as a result, the peace deal was canceled prematurely.
