Opposition Mps have called for the review of the Regulation of Interception of Communications Act 2007, which authorizes the tapping of telephones and other private communication for security purposes.
The MPS who attended the parliamentary Forum on media on journalist’s rights said that the Interception of Communications Act worries them since it infringes on their privacy.
Mps who include Dr.Lulume Bayiga and Joseph sewungu said that they are worried that government may chose to prosecute some of them and other people using the message they get from their telephone through tapping.
Sewungu said that as members of parliament they should team up and cause the amendment of the Interception of Communications Act because its becoming a problem to their life.
The President assented to the Regulation of Interception of Communications Act 2007 on August 5, 2010. The Act provides for the interception and monitoring certain communication in the course of their transmission through telecommunication, postal or any related service or system.
The senior officer with the Uganda Human Rights commission Rose Mary Kemigisha called for punishment of police officers who abuse people’s human rights and journalists rights while are carrying out their work.
