The public accounts committee has directed police CID to inspect the 46 dormant bank accounts of the ministry of Education following the failure by the ministry to explain the amount of money they had before closure.
The committee chaired by Jinja East Member of Parliament Paul Mwiru also instructed police CID to get statement from the ministry of education accountant Jimmy Lubwama since he failed to give the details concerning these dormant accounts.
Lubwama also failed to tell the number of active accounts ,mps
Lubwama presented to the committee only 39 dormant accounts and failed to account for seven other accounts which ring a bell to MPS and doubted his accounting skills for the ministry.
He also failed to tell the committee the number of bank accounts the ministry of education has in banks.
The vice chairperson of the committee Paul Mwiru said that these dormant accounts have to be crosschecked because some of the ministries accounting officers use them to steal government funds.
Mps on the committee also grilled the ministry of education officials led by the under Secretary Doreen Katusiime over diversion of 25 billion shillings to un budgeted items which could have affected other work.
The ministry accountant apologized for not seeking the permission from the secretary to Treasury to divert the money for other items
