A section of lawmakers has defended the deployment of the Uganda People’s Defence forces in Southern Sudan and the recent remarks made by President Yoweri Museveni regarding the conflict.

This comes after another group of Parliamentarians led by Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo criticized the deployment of the Ugandan Forces without Parliamentary approval as per the constitution.

Kaberamaido County MP Dr. Kenneth Omona said that in situation of an emergency where lives of many Ugandans were at risk, the UPDF deployment in the troubled nation was necessary and could not wait for the recall of parliament for a special sitting for approval.

Dr. Omona applauded the interventions and decision by President Museveni to deploy the UPDF troops that managed to control the Juba Airport that allowed evacuation of Ugandan citizens in the conflict areas.

Eastern region Youth MP Peter Egwang and Kwania county Tonny Ayoo also defended President Museveni’s statements over the ceasefire in Southern Sudan, saying that the statement reflected the position of the Intergovernmental Authority for Development(IGAD).

President Museveni is quoted as to have given a four days ultimatum within which the former South Sudanese Vice President Riek Machar should stop fighting and opt for negotiations.

The President’s statement was strongly criticized by some lawmakers saying it would prompt attacks by south Sudanese on the Ugandan Citizens still trapped in the troubled nation.

However Dr. Omona says that Museveni’s remarks only amplified the position of the regional body that seeks to stop the occurrence of coups on the continent and also ensure peace in South Sudan.
