The commissioner general of Uganda prisons service Johnson Byabashaija is making an on spot assessment on the conditions of prisons in the Busoga, Bugishu and karamoja regions starting on 9th to 18th of this month.
Uganda prison service spokes person Frank Baine has told our reporter that the assessment is done to guide the department on where more resources would be put during the budget process.
Baine says in the coming financial year 2013-2014, they want to focus on eliminating the use of bucket system in prisons and renovation and expansion of the prisons many which are in the sole state.
He adds that with the renovations of the prisons the escapes by prisoners will reduce.
Baine says about 186 sub county prisons up country need to be expanded to have them accommodate between 100 to200 prisoners, saying these were constructed as holding cells to hold a capacity of only 10 prisoners but they have been transformed in to prisons.
