The new technology to help Uganda’s private fertiliser traders to develop competitive fertiliser procurement and distribution systems is to be extended to all sectors across the country.

Using funding from donors such as Usaid, the International Fertiliser Development Centre (IFDC) was introduced to help fertiliser importers, distributors and retailers monitor. The new technology allows farmers to use smart phones equipped with the mFarms application to record supplies bought from distributors and sales made to customers.

The technology is being piloted amongst many agro dealers in Uganda. With the new technology, agro dealers can deliver regular reports to the Ministry of Agriculture on issues to do with fertilisers. Using smartphone technology can reduce losses by 50 per cent.

The donors told us that they are happy to work with the Ministry of Agriculture Uganda to increase agricultural production through information technology. They are sure the project will positively impact on Uganda’s sector.
