A team of youth and teachers and board of governors from St. Benedict’s Roman High School Alcester in United Kingdom, archdiocese of Birmingham donated one billion Uganda shillings to Uganda Catholic church movement during their visit to the historical Uganda Martyrs Shrine, Namugongo, Kampala.
The team was led by Tim Sarah, the head teacher of the group. The team of world catholics came to Uganda at the time when the Catholic Church in Uganda is preparing to celebrate the Golden Jubilee since the former king of Buganda kingdom, Mwanga Basamula II killed the catholics, Moslems and Protestants who had rebelled against his government. Late Pope Paul VI canonized Uganda Martyrs on October, 18, 1964.
The martyrs were canonised in 1964 during Pope Paul VI’s pastoral visit to Uganda.
The Uganda martyrs were burned to death on June 3, 1886 for refusing to renounce their faith in Jesus Christ of Nathreth.
On June, 3rd every year, Christians from all walks of life and from all over the world congregate at Namugongo to commemorate the lives of the Uganda Martyrs and their dedication to their religious beliefs.
