Women living with HIV/AIDS in Africa under their umbrella organization Pan African positive women coalition have asked governments to ensure that they create conducive environment for women living with the disease.
Addressing a press conference at parliament the woman representative for women living with HIVand disability on the organization Pan African positive women coalition , Betty Kwagala said that many times disabled women living with HIV fail to go to health centres and hospitals to access medication due to un conducive environment.
Kwagala says that most times disabled women living with HIV are victims of rape however when they demand for services they are victimized and stigmatized.
She further says that communication barriers have also made it difficult to access services calling on government to ensure sign language is made compulsory at all health facilities.
In another development As Donors threaten to withdraw aid due to the anti-homosexuality law in Uganda, the chairperson of the parliamentary committee on HIV AIDS Sarah Kayagi Netalisire is calling on government to create a trust fund that can help people living with the disease.
She says as Uganda commemorates the International women’s day this week-end (8th March), women should lobby government to institute an alternative funding to help infected persons.
Kayagi says most HIV/AIDS programs have been surviving on donor funding and when donors pull out, this will negatively affect HIV/AIDS infected persons.
A coalition of African women living with HIV/AIDS, a regional body says that HIV infections continue to rise which they attribute to majority of women not having a choice to negotiate for safer sex.
