The Pan African Parliament has paid tribute to the former President of South Africa, Nelson Madiba Mandela, who died in December last year.
Hon. Jacqueline Amongin (NRM, Ngora district), who moved the Motion, recognized Mandela’s quest to bring equality in Africa and defend the rights of the most vulnerable in society especially the children and youth.
The Pan African Parliament is meeting in Midrand, South Africa for the Fourth Ordinary Session of the Third Parliament.
“We recognize the legacy he has left not only for South Africa, Africa but the whole world,” said Amongin, who is also the First Vice President of the PAP Youth Caucus. “We note the strong lessons learnt from him who, after serving 27 years in jail was elected and served for one five year term as President of South Africa.”
In the Motion, the Pan African Parliament, in its first meeting since Mandela’s death, sought to join the rest of the world in celebrating the life and legacy of Mandela. In addition, the Pan African Parliament sought to recognise the 11th day of July, designated by the UN as ‘Mandela Day’ to bring together young leaders from all over the world to appreciate and discuss issues of democracy, peace and security.
Mandela was also recognized for his contribution in the launch of the PAP Trust Fund in 2007.
Following Mandela’s ,the Parliament of Uganda paid tribute, recognizing his contributions to the African people. He won the first multi racial general election in South Africa in 1994 and served one five year term as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
