Why cases of hepatitis E on increase in Uganda?

 

Hepatitis E is a liver viral disease caused by the hepatitis E virus, a non-enveloped virus transmitted through drinking contaminated water. Uganda is prone to Hepatitis E because of its low latrine coverage and lack of safe drinking water.

Over 75% of households in Uganda, especially in northern Uganda lack access to clean latrines and clean water according to Uganda’s ministry of health.

The World Health Organisation representative in Uganda Dr. Wondi Alemu has implored Uganda Government to earmark adequate resources to improve safe water coverage in the country.

Uganda’s state minister for Karamoja Affairs, Ms Barbra Nekesa has suggested recourse to pumping underground water instead of relying on boreholes which often breakdown.
