Eligibility:
-The minimum requirement for applicants is a BSc degree in earth sciences, chemistry, physics, material sciences, or another exact science.
-The successful recipient of the grant, i.e. the applicant, must be a person, not an institution or company.
-Applicants are encouraged to submit project proposals that involve collaboration with a university or another research institute.
-Applicants may be no more than 40 years of age.

Scholarship Description: Dr. Eduard J. Gübelin (1913-2005) devoted his life and career to the study of gemstones and to advancing the science of gemmology. After celebrating the 100th anniversary of Dr. Gübelin last year, the introduction of this scholarship coincides with the 90th anniversary of the Gübelin Gem Lab, established in 1924. The annual Dr. Eduard Gübelin Research Scholarship will support a cutting-edge research project in the field of gemmology in the broadest sense. The scholarship will be granted once a year to a scientist for a proposed research project. Depending on the type of project, the research might involve collaboration with the Gübelin Gem Lab.

Selection Criteria: The Association checks the incoming project proposals for compliance with the administrative requirements, as well as for suitability in terms of scientific relevance and potential. The Association may contact applicants to clarify any issues regarding their application. Following these initial checks, the Association establishes a shortlist of suitable proposals, based on their relevance and potential. The shortlisted proposals are then forwarded to the members of the Scientific Committee, who will assess the proposals and select the project they consider is best qualified to receive the scholarship. The proposal receiving the highest number of votes by the members of the committee will earn the scholarship.
Notification: The name of the successful project and applicant will be announced in September 2014.
