Minister calls for legalization of abortion

Health Minister Sarah Opendi has called for the legalization of abortion to prevent the deaths of women and girls, who carry out unsafe abortions under the hands of unprofessional people in villages.

A number of people and NGOs including women parliamentarians have also for long time advocated for abortion to be legalized in Uganda.

The minister explains that the process to legalize abortion is already ongoing. But she denies knowledge of it being a ploy of the Europeans.

Opendi also says she is an advocate for reducing maternal mortality. However the Constitution of Uganda and the Penal Code Act outlaw abortion, providing for 14 years of imprisonment for any person who tries to procure an abortion.

The legalization of abortion is also spearheaded by the “New World Order” movement which was recently conceived and adopted by leading UN member states and supported by international organizations.
