The ICT Minister John Nasasira has warned telecom companies who cheat
their customers through unsolicited messages that they risk losing
licenses.
There has been a public outcry over telecom companies who make people
to pay for the messages they do not request for.
While appearing before the parliamentary Committee on ICT chaired by
Vincent Bagire to present the ministry’s budget frame work paper for
the financial year 2014/15, Nasasira said he has already met with the
telecom companies complaining about the same issue because he is a
victim.
When the mps on this committee tasked him to explain what his ministry
was doing to stop these companies from cheating their customers, He
responded that his ministry together with Uganda communications
commission are working with telecom companies to ensure that nobody
pays for solicited messages.
The minister says those companies which will continue charging
customers for messages they do not request for will have their
licenses cancelled.
Meanwhile the ministry of Information ,communication and Technology
(ICT) has directed Bank of Uganda and Uganda communication commission
to develop a law to regulate the operations of mobile money services
in the country.
The permanent secretary in the ministry of ICT Dr. Jimmy Samanya while
appearing before the ICT committee chaired by Vincent Bagire.
Samanya said that the law is needed on mobile money services after an
outcry by public that sometimes are cheated and fail to seek redress
due absence of better law to deal with case.
In another development the ministry of ICT has finalized the Ict
policy and its any time submitted to cabinet for scrutiny and later
taken to parliament for approval.
