The Non-Government Organization Board has called on lawmakers to expedite the amendment of the NGO ACT to ensure that the country benefits from the organizations it regulates.
The secretary of the NGO Board Francis Wanyina told the Parliamentary Committee on defence and Internal Affairs that the secretariat is incapacitated to fully execute its mandate of regulating and monitoring of NGOs in the country.
Wanyina said the NGO board Secretariat has only 13 staff members of which one is in charge of monitoring 12000 organizations in the country.
This came after concerns from the mps who asked the Board to evaluate and quantify the contributions of the NGOs to the development of the National economy.
The Internal Affairs Minister General Aronda Nyakayirima acknowledged that the ever mushrooming NGOs in the country need strict control to stop duplication of work while some of them are instead affecting government programs.
