Mbabazi appeals to Ugandans to fight corruption

Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi has appealed to the people of Uganda to play a more active role in following up money governments allocates for service delivery.

The Minister says the members of Ugandan public can play a vital role in ensuring effective service delivery in communities if they monitor government budget allocations and help eliminate corruption which Mbabazi says is one of the leading ills challenging the government in Uganda.

He was speaking at the launch of the ‘Action for Transparency (A4T) project at Wakiso district headquarters. The A4T project is aimed at developing innovative and catalytic tools and methods to strengthen journalists, human rights activists, local leaders and all the people of Uganda in their capacity to fight corruption, and mismanagement of public funds, by developing their ability to access, assess, and communicate information about Uganda government budgets, and spending in order to minimise capture of public funds.

The project funded by the government of Sweden is being implemented by Fojo Media Institute (part of Linaues University in Sweden), and local partners in Uganda and Zambia including Transparency international Uganda, Uganda Media Development Foundation, and the African Centre for Media Excellence.

Amama Mbabazi says Uganda has tried to put in place and strengthen funding for anti corruption agencies and implementation of anti corruption laws, but the efforts of Ugandans in monitoring funds will be vital in stopping corruption and ensuring public accountability.
