Fistula cases on increase in Ugandan

Doctors have reported that the number of women suffering from fistula is on increase in the Republic of Uganda. Dr. Susan Obore, a fistula surgeon at Mulago Hospital, tells the press that some cases of fistula can not be treated in Uganda.

Dr. Obore says that over 1900 women contract fistula in Uganda every year. But Ugandan hospitals have no capacity to treat them in a single year.

Uganda National Referral Hospital, Mulago, according to Dr. Obore, can only treat 300 women. Most of the hospitals in Uganda can not treat fistula.

The Uganda health demographic survey shows that 2% of women in the reproductive age group (14-49 years) have a fistula. In Uganda many women aged above 60 years live with fistula they got during their youth days.
