The Uganda meat producers cooperative union (UMPCU) has signed with the Norwegian livestock producing and exporting company (Nortura) to lift the business of livestock business in Uganda with the aim of satisfying both the local and foreign markets in beef products.
Speaking at the signing ceremony held this afternoon in Kampala, the CEO, UMPCU Dr. Joshua Waiswa, reveals that the new signing will see meat producing cooperatives and companies benefit from the new initiative by getting ready markets, applying for loans, receiving education on how to manage livestock for better quality products.
He also mentions that through the new pact the union with the help of govt will commence the construction of a modern abattoir in the central district of Nakaseke that will slaughter meat for export and local consumption with the intension of promote quality adding that works of the abattoir will cost USD.7.5 million.
However, the chairman of the union, Jones Kamugisha states that this agreement will result into the formulation of unions at local level that will facilitate streamlined livestock business across the country.
The union has 33 societies with over 2651 members.
