The Army commander General Edward Katumba Wamala has demanded for stringent laws to make risky for fishing immature fish.
Katumba Wamala was appearing before the Agriculture committee of parliament CHAIRED BY KAKUTO MP MATHIUS KASAMBA, explaining how Rally driver Ponsiano Rwakataka’s immature fish was confiscated and taken to court on its way to DRC.
He told mps that despite Rwakataka attempted actions to use force to remove his immature fish from court stores security blocked him and taken to court.
He said that if Uganda was not much guided by law such people who deal in immature fish should have been put on firing squad to discourage those dealing in illegal fishing saying this economic sabotage
He showed to the committee immature packaged fish which should have not on market and mps told him to move on with such operations which caused Rwakataka’s fish impounded.
He said that Rwakataka was arrested and his fish impounded because he was tarnishing names of top officials in government that they support him in this illegal activity.
He said that corruption is the one fueling the fishing of immature fish in the country saying this is caused by low pay to the law enforcement officers in the ministry of fisheries.
He said that due to illegal fishing seven companies dealing fish has closed their business out of 21 companies in the country causing unemployment to 7000 people.
He said that depletion of water bodies in Uganda will cause 4 million people jobless
