CP Youths wants youth mps abolished in Parliament
A group of youth leaders from the Conservative Party (CP) led by their
President Aruho Phionah have presented a petition to parliament
challenging the election of youth representatives in Parliament.
While appearing before the legal and parliamentary affairs committee
chaired by Kajara County Mp Steven Tashobya, Aruho told mps that the
whole point of youth representation in parliament as an interest group
should be erased and dropped from the constitution by amending article
78 (c) because it is intended to promote corruption and it injures
their status as marginalized group.
She said that the youths are elected through Electoral College which
is not transparent at all yet they can be elected through a
democratically organized election. They mentioned the Kyankwanzi
resolution which was spear headed by the youth mps minus consulting
their electorates yet in principle they were supposed to be consulted
before they pronounce themselves on such matters.
Gerald Karuhanga the youth mp representing western region told the
group that at this material time it is very hard for parliament to
remove youth representation because of their noble job. He added that
they are elected by the youths themselves and it came as a result of
so many complaints from the youth to have also their voice in
parliament. The chairperson of the committee Steven Tashobya assured
them that their views will be considered when making their report.
