Civil society organizations have petitioned parliament demanding for rejection of the proposal to reinstate the 200 shillings tax on Kerosene.
The petition of 27272 signatures was handed over to the mps on parliamentary committee of finance.
The petition was spear headed by the Forum in women in Democracy, Hope after Rape, SEATIN and Action Aid.
The vice chairperson of Forum for women in democracy Linu Zidinga said that if the tax on kerosene is not removed in the budget will over burden women who use paraffin to breast feed their children at night.
She said that there should be no tax on kerosene because electricity in Uganda is still limited for most of the population.
The group urged parliament not pass the National Budget with kerosene and asked government to adopt a progressive taxation approach where the rich and profit making people incur more of the taxes.
The civil society organizations proposed that government should intensify complaisance on multinational companies to pat taxes without evasion instead of burdening the poor.
However, mps on the finance told the group that they delayed to bring their petition although the tax on kerosene needs review .
