Over Ten million trees are to be planted in Bunyoro Region to help mitigate the effects of urbanization that have been brought about by the discovery of oil.
While meeting the Speaker of Parliament and the Leadership of Bunyoro region to popularize the programmee today, the executive director of Youth Go Green Campaign Edwin Muhumuza said that they have decided to undertake this initiative because of the threat they expect as a result of the oil activities in the Albertine Region.
Muhumuza notes that tree planting is one of the ways that can help to conserve the environment.
With the anticipated growth of the region into a city, Muhumuza says that the region will be experiencing vigorous gas emissions from factories and these trees can help to absorb the emitted carbons, including the prevention of drought thus saving the environment.
Edwin Muhumuza further revealed that this campaign which is to be unleashed next month, will involve a number of stake-holders like oil companies however the youth are the main target in this campaign.
Meanwhile Bujenje county MP in Masindi district Kabakumba Matsiko has expressed dismay over the continued practices of charcoal burning in the areas of Bunyoro.
Kabakumba says that charcoal burners in the areas of Bunyoro and other parts of the Country have led to the depletion of the forests especially the indigenous trees noting that measures to curb this practice should be put in place to save the environment.
