Health students perfomance decline

In the just released result by the Uganda Allied Health Examinations Board (UAHEB) and the ministry of education indicate a 10% decline in the performance in the academic year 2013/14 compared with 2012/13 which has been attributed to poor teaching equipment, little curriculum coverage among other factors.

Reading the results to the minister, the executive secretary UAHEB, Mr. Kato Kimoga states that out of the 2979 total candidates who sat for the final exams, only 2439 (81.9%) candidates passed in 2013/14 compared to 2656 (91%) in 2012/13.

Out of the 2979 candidates who passed, 1567 (64.2%) were males and 872 (35.8%) were females) with the total number of students who did not perform to the expectations of the board was 540 (18.1%)

In his remarks at the release, Mr. Kato mentions that the decline has mostly been evident in pharmacy among other two certificate programmes.
However, on releasing the results, the state minister for higher education, Dr. J.Clesestom Muyingo revealed govt’s commitment to continue prioritizing health training in its budgeting process to ensure appropriate numbers and quality of health professionals continue to be developed.

In a related development, the chairman, UAHEB, Dr. Wilson Rwandembo Mugisa resports a steady fast improvement in training institution which is reflected in the quality of products produced and commits that more improvements are to come.

Among the fields that the board examined students include, diplomas in anaesthesi, clinical ophthalmology, dental technology, medical laboratory technology, among others and certificates in, environmental health science and medical laboratory techniques.
